Here's what Ohio University Student Senate President Jamie Walter said in an April 30, 2003 Post article in the thick of campaigning:
What separates the Voice party is the fact that we have a vision
a dream of what Senate can be she said. If you don't have a direction or an idea of what you can make happen nothing gets changed. We know exactly what it is and what we want to do to make change happen.
So what has happened, Student Senate? I've heard things about Bobcat medals, increased lighting on the bike paths and a need for more single-user, lockable restrooms in campus facilities, because only four of the 28 buildings have such availability. And again, it takes more than 30 senators to get together just to pass a resolution. Then what?
Walter and her Voice party campaigners ran with the slogan, You talk
We listen.
Then listen. Here's how to get things done. Every year, senators speak of addressing the condition of off-campus student rentals. Maybe they knock on a few doors, pass a few resolutions. And some people find out, only because every Thursday there is a Post article detailing senate's ping-pong conversation. Walter in April mentioned doing something about off-campus housing. I've heard nothing.
But I know on Oct. 16, The Post ran a front-page story that examined that very issue. One guy wrote it. Thousands read it. Some people got pissed. Some were delighted. And hopefully some things will change. Are you taking notes?
Walter, as senate president, gets free tuition. We get $15 a week. You can do more. And I'm going to give you the chance to prove it. Winter Quarter, I pledge to attend every Student Senate meeting. Let me in on how things work. Let me in on how your day goes as president or treasurer. Let us all know. And the resulting story or stories will mirror that. Whether they're positive or negative is up to you.
Walter said last April, (If elected)
I don't need to spend time learning how Senate works. I can start fixing it right away
and students can see immediate results.
Real results are overdue.
