An Ohio University student's original play will be performed in a lab show this weekend.
Matthew A. Sprosty, an OU senior majoring in playwriting, wrote the All's Fair for his senior project while Rebecca Cole, an OU senior and directing major, handled the direction. Cole receives class credit for the play.
They both worked as writer and director two years ago on the lab show Ganarey's 101.
Other colleges and universities generally do not allow students to have readings of their plays, let alone performances of original works, Sprosty said. This year, the OU senior playwriting majors each are putting up full-length pieces, Sprosty said. His is the first to perform.
All's Fair takes place in the course of one workday and centers around two co-workers, Alice and Michael, as they compete for a job opening at an advertising company. Their boss, Mr. Bania is a chauvinist, while Michael is a romantic character. Michael is interested in Alice, but is immature with his emotions. Alice has set views of how women should be treated.
The characters of the Voice of Michael and the Voice of Alice tell the inner monologues of the main characters and translate their body language, Sprosty said.
The theme of the play revolves around the equality movement for women, and how romantics and chauvinists probably do not want equality to work out, he said.
Theatre majors underwent an auditions process for the parts they are playing, he said. They have been rehearsing All's Fair for three weeks.
Cole said she chose Sprosty's script in part because its humor and adult language appeals to college students.
Sprosty will continue working on the play after the performances.
