Tenants in the wrong, landlord says

An article in last Thursday's Post documented numerous complaints against Athens landlords, but one property owner named in the article has come forward claiming her residents caused excessive damage to the property.

In the story, Athens landlords cited for violations of city code

which ran on Oct. 16, 61 North Congress St. tenant Eric Boone claimed landlord Eleanor Barstow ignored his initial requests to repair a recurrent leak.

However, Barstow recently presented documents that counter that claim. She presented work orders for thousands of dollars of repairs done to the property and letters from her lawyer to the tenants informing them that the damage done exceeded the security deposit.

Also, John Wharton of University Off-Campus Housing leased the property to Boone in September 2000 before it was reclaimed by Barstow. She said she now controls her own properties and will not do business with Wharton or University Off-Campus Housing again. 17
