Shelter shows police support with baked goods

The Athens county sheriff, Athens police and Ohio University police officers were surprised yesterday morning by two trays of cookies from My Sister's Place.

The cookies were delivered by the shelter's program director Kelly Kilgour as part of the second annual Cookies for Cops program. The program is one part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month where My Sister's Place gives cookies to law enforcement members to show appreciation for their work to end domestic violence

said Executive Director Kate McGuckin.

The cookies arrived wrapped in plastic with a purple ribbon - APD employee Linda Walls said with a laugh. And it's nice to be thanked.

Staff and volunteers of My Sister's Place have baked 20 dozen cookies since Friday, and will probably bake more, Kilgour said. She said 12 different law enforcement agencies - they'll remember us

Kilgour said.

Kilgour said 96 domestic violence victims stayed at the emergency shelter operated by My Sister's Place last year. As well as the shelter, My Sister's Place provides outreach services such as a 24-hour crisis hotline, individual counseling, support groups and legal advocacy, according to My Sister's Place Web site, http://home.frognet.net/~mysis/.
