Pistols increase individuals' safety

Editor,

Philip Ewing's Post editorial about impending gun zealotry is yet another example of a misled, confused man brainwashed by the anti-gun lobby. He offered absolutely no proof or statistics to back up any of his (false) statements and predictions. The author ignores the fact that guns are nearly twice as likely to be used to stop a crime than to commit one. There's a reason police carry pistols Mr. Ewing; they offer protection. He predicts that in concealed-carry states, traffic jams would turn into blood baths. Politicians and critics just like him predicted the same thing when Florida passed their concealed-carry bill in 1989. Robbery, carjacking, and rape have all declined by significant rates in all 38 states that issue concealed-carry licenses for handguns. Perhaps this suggests that criminals prefer unarmed victims? Does the author even know what a semi-automatic weapon is? A six-shooter revolver from the 1800s is semi-automatic, as well as your grandpa's hunting rifle. Ewing fears that the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban will be removed. The ban is cosmetic, an easy sell for politicians to appear tough against crime. Certain guns are labeled assault weapons when they feature pistol grips, compensators, and bayonet lugs, or look like military weapons. They are no different in function than any other gun. Carol Feinstein, D-Calif., author of the bill, even acknowledges that assault weapons are used in less than 2 percent of gun crimes. An average deer-hunting rifle is far more accurate and has a longer range than any assault rifle.

Ewing cites the Columbine tragedy as a reason to ban guns. Those two cowards broke 21 gun laws. Would another have made a difference? I doubt it. It sounds to me like Ewing is buddies with the liberal, anti-capitalist, anti-American Michael Moore. I implore you to visit http://www.bowlingfortruth.com as Moore's lies and intentional misleadings are brought to light. Infringements on your Second Amendment rights (read: rights, not privileges) only hurt those who are not inclined to break the law in the first place. Ewing can keep trusting 15-minute plus police response times. I'll place mine in my Beretta 9mm.
