Five Bettys and five Als used chair dancing and phony musical instruments while lip-synching to Paul Simon to run away with first place in the annual Omega Mouth competition.
The team of Alpha Gamma Delta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Delta Lambda Phi and Sigma Gamma Rho danced to Call Me Al in khakis and white dress shirts to win the final Homecoming activity. The event raised more than $2,500 for Big Brother/Big Sister of Athens County from admission money, said Phoenix Kovacs, president of Order of Omega, the greek honor and leadership society that sponsored the lip-synching competition.
Teams of five men and five women from each of the eight Homecoming pairings got about two hours to learn lyrics, choreograph a dance routine and design props after receiving a song, said Carla Cicero, Order of Omega's public relations chairwoman. The routines featured colorful costumes ranging from cross-dressing Spice Girls to cowgirls.
After Omega Mouth, Heidi Christensen, executive vice president of the Women's Panhellenic Association, announced the overall winners of Homecoming. Members of Delta Gamma, Theta Chi, Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Alpha Mu erupted in cheering and clapping when they heard they won the competition. The group also took second place in the lip-synching event.
Group members dressed up like Barbie, Ken and other toys to dance and lip-synch to Aqua's Barbie Girl. Tara Gygax, a member of Delta Gamma, dressed as Barbie in a gauzy dress and fedora with a sparkly tiara.
Gygax said the group was excited about its Homecoming win. When asked where the dancers were able to get fancy dresses in such a short time period, she said, We had them in the basement of the house.
Other greek Homecoming activities generated more than $2,500 for the Five Angels Foundation, which raises money in honor of the three Ohio University students and two Ohio State University students who died in a fire in Columbus in April. Erin DeMarco, Andrea Dennis and Christine Wilson, the three OU students, were all members of Alpha Gamma Delta.
We were all really excited to help out with the philanthropy
said Damian Clark, Homecoming chairman for Theta Chi. 17
