Faculty trio to perform at OU School of Music

Ohio University faculty members from the School of Music will be giving a free faculty recital at 8 p.m. tonight in the recital hall of the music building.

Performing artists are Marjorie Bagley on violin, Michael Carrera on cello and Gail Berenson on piano.

Bagley said she has been preparing for the recital since the beginning of the school year, and the idea to collaborate on the performance was mutual.

Berenson said many hours of solo and collective practicing went into preparing for the show.

The three of us had played together last year quite a bit

and we talked over the summer about putting something together so it was really a group decision Bagley said.

Bagley said she expects the performance to draw an enthusiastic crowd of students, faculty and area residents.

Berenson said even though there is pressure and expectation for them to perform because they are performance instructors, it is not a concern because of their love for showcasing their talent.

It's especially nice to get together with colleges to share in the preparation and the performance itself

she said. The collaboration of instruments gives a much wider range of sound than when performing alone.

The program includes two trio pieces, Haydn's Trio in E Minor and Mendelssohn's Trio in C Minor and one violin and piano piece, Debussy's Violin Sonata.

Bagley is a founding member and first violinist of the Arcata String Quartet and has appeared throughout Europe and North America. Carrera has performed with a variety of orchestras and symphonies around the world. Berenson has performed throughout the United States and Europe and earned recognition as a lecturer and author on musician wellness.

The trio also will be taking their show to Carnegie Mellon University, West Virginia University and some potential other East Coast venues beginning in March.
