University Curriculum Council made suggestions yesterday for the bachelor of criminal justice program in response to a seven-year assessment that found the curriculum and goals fail to meet expectations.
The committee that produced the report, chaired by associate professor of chemical engineering Dan Gulino, recommended that new faculty be hired and a new department be created specifically for the criminal justice major, which is housed by University College. Council chair Margret Appel said neither of these recommendations would be possible.
The review committee also found that the amount of funding for the program fails to meet expectations and that students would benefit greatly from the addition of a course in advanced research.
University College Dean David Descutner criticized the report, which said that the program reflects negatively on Ohio University.
This was a very prejudiced review
Descutner said. There was no evidence for that assertion and as far as I'm concerned that has no standing. He suggested that an alumni survey would shed light on the reputation of the program.
Council passed a motion to accept the report and recommended that the college address the issues in the report and review the program again in two years.
The council also heard a proposal for an honors program for the College of Health and Human Services.
