The Ohio men's club soccer team went 3-0 during the weekend, defeating Miami, Ball State and Bowling Green at Ohio State.
The club continued its strong start with the weekend sweep, racing out to a 5-0-2 record through seven matches.
The highlight of the weekend was the opening match against Miami on Saturday, club president Brian Stewart said. Miami took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Ohio fought back and tied the score on Cory Cracchiolo's header from a corner kick five minutes into the second half.
Then, with 15 minutes remaining, Brian Kanzigg notched the game-winning score in the 2-1 win.
Making the victory especially sweet, Stewart said, was that Ohio had never beaten Miami in the club's 10-year history.
Ohio took the Saturday nightcap, 2-0, against Ball State, scoring both of its goals in the first half. Jon Chleboun scored 10 minutes into the contest, and Kanzigg scored on a breakaway in the first half to put the game out of reach. Goalie Pat Conway got the shutout.
On Sunday, Kanzigg scored his third goal of the weekend as Ohio completed the weekend with a 2-1 Sunday win against Bowling Green.
Kanzigg scored in the first half, and Jack Wright broke a 1-1 second-half tie with a goal off a corner kick.
Ohio will play host when it meets defending league champion Wright State at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chessa Field.
Surf Team Coasts to Carolina
The recently formed Ohio club surf team went to North Carolina during the weekend for its first trip of the year.
Started last spring, the club consists of about 50 members, most of whom do not have any previous surfing experience. The team spent some of its trip surfing and also helped a surf organization clean up beaches along the Carolina coast.
The trip was a success, club member Eric Friese said, despite the cold and windy conditions. However, many of the first-timers found the experience to be more than a little daunting.
Most of us just got beat up out there
Friese said.
