Charter services need grant money to continue

An ordinance affecting the funding for bus service through Lakefront Lines, Inc. was introduced during Monday's Athens City Council meeting and should be voted on next week.

Councilwoman Carol Patterson, D-2nd ward, said the bus route - featuring a route starting in Charleston with stops in Huntington and Parkersburg, W. Va., Columbus and Cleveland - needs to partner with the city in order to continue offering the bus service. The agreement will allow Lakefront Lines to apply for grants that they would not otherwise be eligible for.

The bus service, which has been offered in the city of Athens for many years, will continue to operate along the same route that it has in the past, Patterson said. The agreement will not cost the city any money and the ticket agent is paid through Ohio University. Tickets can be purchased at The Oasis.

In other council news, Councilwoman Nancy Bain, R-3rd ward, announced a presentation set for next week on the proposed design for a historical museum genealogical library in The Armory.

The Planning and Development Committee also will meet next week to discuss the planned Campus Edge development. Council members postponed the ordinance to wait on three agreements. Two of the three agreements should be completed by next week, said Councilman Ed Baum, R-at-large.
