Raising money for charity has never looked so good.
In two days, the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority will unveil their Men of Ohio calendar to raise money for the American Juvenile Arthritis Organization (AJAO). The money will be used for research to find a cure for juvenile arthritis.
The black and white calendar features 12 of Ohio University's finest men displayed in various outdoor scenes. The photographs, taken by Ohio University graduate Amanda May, were staged throughout campus and the Athens area, including Strouds Run State Park and various local lakes. May used the photos for her portfolio and then turned them over to OU visual communications student Meghan McClelland, who designed the calendar.
According to Colleen Hart, Alpha Omicron Pi's philanthropy chairperson, the project took almost all of Spring Quarter to complete. After hearing about the idea from Purdue University's Alpha Omicron Pi chapter, Hart decided the idea would allow lots of people within and outside of the sorority to get involved in fundraising efforts.
Hart hopes that sales will be good; the sorority's sales goal is to sell nearly all of the 1,000 calendars that were printed. If the sorority reaches its goal, the calendar project will raise about $5,000 for AJAO.
OU junior Justin Feldkamp is one of the men who were invited to become part of the calendar. He appears shirtless and glistening with water drops as the September model on the calendar. Feldkamp heard about the project at a solicitation table in Ping Center, but other models were recruited by sorority members and friends through word-of-mouth.
I'm an outgoing person
so I didn't mind doing a photo shoot. It's for a good cause so what the heck right? Feldkamp said.
He said he enjoyed the photo shoot, especially because the photographer was really fun and she knew what she was doing.
The sorority members received over 40 applications from interested men all over campus. After the applications were reviewed, a panel of sorority members interviewed 20 men and informed them of their duties regarding the calendar: to pose for a photo shoot and raise $150 for their page in the calendar, as well as sell a minimum of 12 calendars this week. After the interview process was finished, 12 men were invited to become the models for the calendar.
The calendars will be for sale at the College Gate Oct. 8, 9 and 10 and cost $6.
