Soccer co-captain eyes tournament

Ohio soccer co-captain Christel Schiering added her name to another line in the record book this weekend by moving into the lead for career-points-scored. The forward, a senior special education major, sat down with The Post's Joe Rominiecki to discuss her career and the team's goals for this season.

The Post: Let's start with this past weekend. After winning two games at home and evening up your overall record, does this team really believe that it has righted the ship in just one weekend?

Schiering: Yeah, I do. I think that this weekend is going to give us a lot of momentum. Just the way that we played together and the way that we came together as a team, everything just fell into place. We worked last week on the little things, doing it as a team and everybody coming out and working together. I think that's what we were lacking. Our offense has definitely picked up.

The Post: You play alongside Tiffany Horvath, a freshman who leads the team in scoring with six goals and one assist thus far in the season. As a senior what is it like to play with her, and what kind of chemistry have you two developed?

Schiering: I don't think her being a freshman means anything. It's a lot of fun playing next to her. Our styles are very different, but we complement each other. I think when we're up there, we're equals. She's a teammate, not a freshman. It's been a lot of fun and this weekend shows how much we can work well together, combine and create opportunities for each other, as well as other teammates.

The Post: Do you think that some day she might be challenging some of these records that you've set?

Schiering: Oh yeah, I definitely do. I think that's a good thing. These records are set for somebody else to come along and break them. That's how your program gets better, and that's how you get noticed. I think she probably will, and I'm happy for her. She's a good player, and she deserves that.

The Post: In your four years at Ohio, you've been an integral part of the growth of the Ohio soccer program. However, when this season ends, what are your plans for life after Ohio soccer?

Schiering: I plan to go teach and probably pick up a coaching job at a high school.

The Post: Will you and this team be satisfied with anything less than a Mid-American Conference championship, a MAC Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament?

Schiering: No. If we don't get the MAC championship, fine. It's what we do in the end in the tournament. If we don't win this tournament, I don't think anybody on our team would be satisfied. We have the team, and we have the experience. It's what we should do. We're very capable of winning this tournament and going to the NCAA for the first time. If we didn't, we'd definitely look back on it and have regrets because we'd know that that's what we should have done.
