A group of Ohio University faculty and administrators will speak at an international conference in Malaysia, discussing media and technology around the world.
The conference will take place July 21 and 22 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and will address media education and training, new technology curriculum, research and development policies and the effects of those subjects on students and business communities.
"Basically, the purpose is to convene a group of people who will have the opportunity to learn and engage in discussions about education and training in media in modern ages," said Jennifer Cochran, assistant director for communications for the center for international studies.
OU's Southeast Asian studies program is co-sponsoring the event with the University of Malaysia. Organizers hope to create an awareness of new technologies, businesses and cultures from Southeast Asia, Cochran said.
"(OU has) had a partnership with the University of Malaysia for a few years," Cochran said. "It's to strengthen media education, and education around media issues."
The conference will open with an address by Malaysia's Minister of Information, Tan Sri Khalil Yaakob. OU telecommunications faculty members Duncan Brown, Buzz Clift, Drew McDaniel and Norma Pecora will present papers at the conference. Rick Shriver, coordinator of electronic media at OU-Zanesville, will present a report on media education and training in the United States. OU Provost Stephen Kopp also will give an address. The conference will close with a speech by Josep Rota, OU associate provost for international programs and director of the center for international studies.
