Council takes on myriad of city problems

Trash removal, skate park funding and amendments for two current staffing levels were topics of discussion of last night’s Athens City Council meeting.

Ray Hazlett, assistant service-safety director and Mike Cooper, city sanitarian, spoke to council members about the importance of trash removal during student move-out.

The utilities department has asked tenants to notify them when they will be putting out their final load of trash to help the city prepare for extra trash removal. Beginning June 11, the center will be increasing the number of trash collections each day, Hazlett said.

Chronic offenders, who have failed to clean up their yards, have been referred to Ohio University Judiciaries, Cooper said. But because citations are issued to addresses and not residents, officials do not know the names of the offenders.

Copper asked council for suggestions on how to obtain the names in the future.

Council also adopted an ordinance last night to allow City Service-Safety Director, Wayne Key, to advertise and accept contract bids for the construction of the skate park.

The total cost is project $292,000, but Kevin Schwartzhoff, director of parks and recreation, has $227,275 to date, said councilwoman Carol Patterson, D-2nd ward.  Skate park funding is about $15,000 short.

Members approved another ordinance that lists areas, composed by council members in April, needing street paving and repairs. The ordinance will authorize $307,800 on these funds, said councilwoman Kathy Hecht, D-1st ward.

Two staffing levels were amended by another adopted ordinance last night. The plant mechanic position at the Athens Sewage Treatment Plant was changed to the plant mechanic/operator.  This new position allows more flexibility for plant workers, said Jim Sands councilman D-at-large.

The other staff change would eliminate the general secretary at the Athens Fire Department and move the secretary in that position to a job in the street department. Councilman Ed Baum, R-at-large, said he hopes that the department will be able to find temporary assistance.

Also introduced at council last night was an ordinance that would allow the city to create a new fund for East State Street debt. The exact amount will be determined later.
