Class teaches students how to start businesses

Artists from across the country ventured to Athens this weekend to display their quilts at The Dairy Barn, but they might have some up-and-coming local competition.

Amber Frash, a senior at Federal Hocking High School, started Comfy Quilts, a quilt-selling business, through a class at her school. She sells 35 inch-by-46 inch quilts for about $20. Each quilt takes about three hours to complete.

Frash is in Student Entrepreneur Training, a venture between 16 area high schools in five counties and the Appalachian Center for Economic Networks.

Jeanne Catalano, program manager for tech ventures at ACENet, said the one-period class, which is typically yearlong, is meant to teach students about starting a business.

During the first half of the year, students create a mock business and learn how to work with finances, do market research, create a business plan and design a logo.
