Nelsonville residents are concerned because of what city council members considered the untimely manner that American Electric Power handled three separate power outages more than two weeks ago.
Altogether 2,500 residents were affected by the power outages, AEP spokeswoman Terry Flora said. Two of the three outages were cause by storms. The first was 7:30 p.m. on May 11. The power went out because of a strong windstorm and was restored by 4:00 p.m. on May 12. The last power outage on May 15 was caused by a high wind and lightning storm and was restored by 10:00 a.m. the same day.
AEP officials also planned a power outage on May 13 to repair storm damages. The outage, which lasted six to eight hours in some areas, was two hours longer than originally estimated because workers found more damage than they expected, Flora said.
AEP officials plan to shut off power to areas in Nelsonville again soon in order to replace the damaged equipment. They identified old equipment and damages caused by animals.
Nelsonville City Manager, Fred Holmes, said the power outages affected citizens from areas west of Watkins Street. Council members and residents are concerned about how well and how fast the situation was handled.
