The Ohio University Board of Trustees approved a possible 9.5 percent tuition increase effective at the start of summer session. At their Friday meeting, the trustees also discussed state budget issues and renovations to the campus.
OU President Robert Glidden will make the final decision about the tuition increase after consulting with the Budget, Finance, Physical Plant and Audit Committee. Increasing tuition in summer circumvents a possible 6 percent tuition cap being debated in the Statehouse. Though not a law yet, most expect the caps to take effect before fall 2003.
Higher education funding has been cut consistently in recent years, and administrators expect the cuts will continue. OU lost $6 million in state funding for the current year, and Glidden said he expects another $5 million shortfall next year.
OU President Robert Glidden credited the OU Alumni Association and the advocacy e-mail campaign for their lobbying efforts to prevent a bill that would have cost OU $13 million a year.
