Police on alert for time change

The University Life Commission hosted a student forum last night so that university officials could discuss student rights and responsibilities during time change weekend. In past years, students have poured into Court Street after Uptown bars close an hour early due to the start of daylight-saving time.

Last year, police officials noticed more hostility in the crowd during time change weekend than in previous years, said Athens police chief Ric Mayer, who spoke during the meeting. He also said the number of fights that occurred during Winter Quarter this year was well above normal, which heightened his concern about this weekend.

To be prepared for a situation like last year, there will be more officers patrolling the streets to ensure safety, he said.

Officers also will be present in and around the residence halls to prevent intoxicated students from getting Uptown, said Tony Camechis, Ohio University Police Department chief.

Dean of Students Terry Hogan, lawyer for the Center For Student Advocacy Dave Baer and University Judiciaries Director Judy Piercy also attended the meeting, which was at Baker Center.

Students are advised above all to use common sense this weekend and not to debate officers when given instructions Hogan said.
