Students in Nelsonville-York City School District will see summer vacation sooner than expected.
At last night's meeting the Nelsonville-York City School Board of Education approved the last day of school for students to be June 9.
Typically the State of Ohio allows each school district five calamity days each school year. Gov. Bob Taft on March 31 signed a bill permitting Ohio school districts to waive an additional five calamity days because of the severe winter weather this year.
Many districts in Ohio cancelled school more than the allotted five days - including Nelsonville-York, which missed 15 days. At the district's March meeting, the board decided the last day of school would be June 14.
The board approved this date in a 3-2 vote, with members Roberta Bunting and Tim Maiden voting against it.
"I thought it was more important to be in schools rather than taking days off," said Maiden.
In other news, concerned parents of students on the wrestling team attended the meeting to tell board members their belief the amount of space for wrestling is inadequate.
Betty Traugh, mother of a junior who wrestles at Nelsonville-York, said many parents were interested in helping raise funds to build a wrestling building for next year's season.
"We just know that it's impossible for them to practice where they are now," she said.
Board Vice President Gary Edwards said Traugh and other interested parents could establish a tax-exempt organization to raise funds to help gain space for the team. He said with an organization, the parents also could ask for donations from the district's athletic boosters.
Also at the meeting the board approved the retirement of Superintendent Thomas Gumpf, effective Sept. 1.
