The federal government should provide its gay or unmarried employees the same benefits it gives married couples, including health insurance, retirement pay and compensation for on-the-job injuries. It is only fair that couples who cannot be married or do not believe in marriage receive the same advantages as other employees. Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, one of nine Democrats running for the presidency in 2004, said yesterday he will re-introduce a domestic benefits bill sponsored by the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, the Wis. Democrat who died last year. Lieberman knows it will be an uphill battle to push the bill through a conservative Congress, and his political courage is admirable.
