Broken elevator traps 21 students

Twenty-one students were stuck in the Music Building's elevator yesterday for approximately 40 minutes.

Most of the students in the elevator were in the group University Singers who had just gotten out of practice at 3 p.m., said Ohio University junior Laurel Franz.

The elevator stopped because there was too much weight in the car, said Sylvester Young, associate director of the school of music.

The elevator stopped about four feet off the first floor. The students were able to open the inside elevator door, but had to wait for maintenance to open the outside door.

Maintenance workers were between shifts at the time, which led to the delay in the outside doors being opened.

One custodian had to be called back to the music building when he was traveling home, Young said.

Despite the circumstances, most of the students were not angry about it.

Though, Franz said jokingly, "I probably won't try (the elevator) for a couple of days now."
