thoughts on students' relationship with the city and their roles in a changing city government.
The Post: What makes you the best candidate for law director?
Garry Hunter: I think it really boils down to experience and qualifications. The position has become very specialized G? somebody has to be familiar with the myriad of state and federal laws that affect local government
and I have experience in that area G? I also have the longest internship program with Ohio University G? it keeps me in touch with the issues important to students.
Pat Lang: The fact that I'm going to make the city of Athens my number one priority. I'd focus entirely on the issues facing the cityG? I can bring the energy and experience that the people of Athens deserve and make this job the priority that it should be.
Post: What is the biggest issue facing students in regards to the law director's office and what should be done about it?
Hunter: The biggest issue I see is how to have an enjoyable meaningful college experience and at the same time coexist with the residents of Athens G? We try to do that with a lot of outreach concepts to make them aware of what the laws are and what their responsibilities are to the citizens of Athens.
Lang: The law director's office can direct students in a lot of indirect ways G? for those agencies (which directly affect students) to be able to make informed decisions
they need access to legal advice and that can happen when we have a law director whose much accessible and available
and can be of service to other agencies that more directly affect the lives of students.
Post: After this election
Athens will have a new mayor and at least two new city council members. What would be your role in helping that transition?
Hunter: That speaks to the need for continuity in the office and the institutional memory I have over the last 30 years G? You really need the continuity of someone in the office
like a steady rudder guiding a ship through new waters
and that's the way I view the office.
Lang: I think I'd be in a good position to aid in that transition because of my experience in city government G? Having been on city council
I know what it's like to be a first-term city council member
the kinds of questions you have and issues you're faced with.
