Pope Francis voices support for same-sex couple civil union laws; Joe Burrow's food pantry promotions help those during COVID-19

Today is Thursday, October 22, 2020. Here’s what you need to know:

Good morning,

Pope Francis recently showed support for civil union laws supporting same-sex couples in the new documentary, “Francesco.”

Francis told the filmmaker, Evgeny Afineevsky, that homosexuals should feel welcome in the community and that they shouldn’t be abandoned.

While many priests around the world show support for the LGBT community, Francis’s statements differ from previous Catholic Church teachings. Pope Francis has given vocal support to the LGBT community since becoming pope in 2013, but he hasn’t done as much in enacting policies that benefit them.

Francis’s stance on LGBT rights differs from his predecessor, Benedict XVI, who was vocally against homosexuality and believed it to be morally evil. As pope, Francis has divided followers of the church over his statements.
