Okay everyone, it has been a month for memes, which is why I had to wait until the actual end of the month to do this. We’ve had some silly ones like Gru's plan, which was nothing but a good time, but it was just lacking … something. We had the "Change my mind" sign, which had some amazing political commentary, but the original creator is actually an extremely conservative podcaster who’s also a bit of an instigator. We even had savage Patrick, which almost hit the nail on the head. It reminded us of a childhood show that we all grew up with. You know, before it was ruined by stretching it out more than 229 episodes and only one good movie.
The champion arose: Krusty Krab vs. Chum Bucket. Honestly, it is just a reskinning of a meme that may sound familiar as something like “store-brand vs. name brand,” but this is evolved into something better.
Not only did this play on the nostalgia factor, but it single handedly managed to encapsulate the social commentary of change my mind, the straight up savage factor of savage Patrick and the comedy of Gru’s plan.
Let’s be real: the show came out in 1999 so this rivalry between the Chum Bucket and Krusty Krab has been around since before some of the people reading this were born. Such a longstanding rivalry is basically symbolic for some of those comparisons (see Android vs. Apple).
I’ve loved Spongebob since the age of 3. As I type this, I am still waiting to try a Krabby Patty, so I guess I feel Plankton’s pain when he never gets that pesky formula. And most importantly, I like comparing things. With all of these reasons, along with the nostalgia, I have to give Krusty Krab vs. Chum Bucket a 4.5/5. It can’t be perfect, because Mr. Krabs is still what’s wrong with capitalism.
Here are some of the best examples of this month’s meme at work:
